Hey there, my name is Amy (short for Amethyst), and I’m a first year BCS student (like you! – unless you’re in B.Cyber lol) under the Game Development stream while aiming for a minor in Music. I drove here all the way from Toronto with very little knowledge of the Ottawa area, and I’ve been trying my best to adjust to all the drastic changes that come with moving and going to university. By running as a First-Year Representative, I want to do my best to make starting out in such a different environment as fun and as simple as possible for everyone by:

• Making the CCSS (and CU as a whole) even more welcoming:
  Talking to new people, especially those much older than you, can be a very difficult and scary experience when being thrown into a brand new environment such as university (trust me, I would know). I’ll do my best to make everyone feel welcome and comfortable being themselves in not just the lounge and events, but all over campus! (I also regular the GSRC lounge btw, come visit sometime)

• Making first-year voices heard:
  Being a fellow first-year, I want to make the first-year experience with CCSS as great as possible by representing every suggestion or concern that first-years may have at internal meetings so that we may adjust accordingly! I would love to hear anything you have to say about the club or its events, so please reach out to me!

• Organizing study groups and tutoring:
  I absolutely adore working with computers and love talking about them even more! I want to assist as many students in computer science as I can by being available in the CCSS lounge to talk about programming whenever possible, and organizing scheduled study groups once exams draw near so we can all catch up together!

• Assisting with and creating new CCSS events:
  The CCSS hosts many fun events that are excellent for first-year students, and experiencing them myself inspired me to contribute and make them even better! For example, the Amazing Race was, in my opinion, the highlight of this year’s Week of Awesome, so I want to create more fun group events like it to make meeting people as a first-year feel effortless. I’ll also eventually host educational things like workshops or talks involving computer science!

• Hosting game nights and working with the CCSS arcade machine:
  As you could imagine from me being in the Game Development stream, I love both playing and creating games! I want to occasionally bring more chill social events to the table as a way to unwind from classes through game nights where we can play suggested games together, or even some of my own games! I also think the arcade machine is really cool and I may make some games specifically designed for it in the future :3

First year is full of new classes, new people, and new opportunities. You’ll probably meet a lot of people, but actually feeling like you are part of the CS community can be harder.

As First-Year Representative, I want to make sure first-years are heard, help people find their place in the community, and bring your ideas and concerns to CCSS. Here’s how I’ll do that for us:

1. Listen 👂

I don’t want to sit in meetings and just assume I know what every first-year wants. I want to ask you. I’ll be easy to reach through Discord, email, and other social media, and I want to make sure your ideas and concerns actually get heard!

• Think something could be improved? Tell me!
• Is there something first-years are concerned about? I want to make sure it reaches the CCSS Board

As first-year rep, let’s start by connecting and actually talking about how we want our first year of computer science to look 😄

2. Community 🤝

You should not need to arrive at Carleton with ten side projects, an internship, and five programming languages under your belt to feel like you belong in the CS community.

I want to help create more ways for first-years to meet people, learn together, and get involved without feeling like they already need to know everyone or know everything.

That can look like:

• Game nights and other low-pressure social events
• Study sessions where first-years can work together and get to know each other
• Beginner-friendly workshops and learning opportunities
• Other new ideas that come directly from first-year students (you!)

3. Act 💥

Listening only matters if we make it happen afterwards. I will bring first-year ideas and concerns directly to the CCSS Board and work with the team to turn ideas into actual events, initiatives, or changes.

I also want to follow up with first-years so you know what happened with the ideas you brought forward - not just collect suggestions and let them disappear.

Aryan Gautam

Hi everyone! My name is Aryan, but I also go by Neo, and I’m running to be your First-Year Representative for the Carleton Computer Science Society.

Since starting at Carleton, I’ve loved how quickly this community has come together. The sheer number of people already reaching out to share notes, ask questions, or just talk through a hard concept has honestly been one of my favorite parts of first year so far. I want to run because I think that spirit of “we’re figuring this out together” is something worth building on, and I’d love the chance to help make it even stronger for everyone.

If elected, here’s what I’d want to focus on:

• Peer learning support. A lot of us are strongest in different areas, some people pick up math fast, others are more comfortable with programming or security concepts right away. I’d like to help create more organized ways for students to connect with each other for study groups, tutoring, or just quick help when something isn’t clicking, so nobody feels like they’re stuck figuring it out completely alone.
• A shared resource space. Something simple like a place where notes, past assignment breakdowns, and helpful study material can live so incoming and current students have a starting point instead of starting from scratch every time.
• A real link between students and the society. I want to make sure first-year voices such as questions about courses, concerns about workload, ideas for events actually reach the people who can act on them, not just float around in group chats. I’d check in regularly with our year to make sure what I’m advocating for reflects what people actually need.
• More ways to build community around what we love. I’d love to help organize more low-pressure events to bring out the passion of computers and hacking in my friends and classmates. Things like casual CTFs, project nights, or study socials sound good so we get more chances to bond over the stuff that brought us here in the first place, not just in classes but outside of them too.

None of this is about doing something completely new or extraordinary, it’s about supporting and growing what’s already working here, and making sure first-years especially feel like they have someone looking out for them as they settle in.

I care about this because I’ve already found myself naturally helping people since I got here, and I’d love the opportunity to do that in a way that reaches further and helps build something lasting for our whole year. I’d be honored to represent you all this year, and I promise to always be approachable, honest, and easy to reach if you ever have something on your mind.

Hi everyone! My name is Jack. I’m a first-year student at Carleton studying Computer Science, in the Game Development stream! I’m interested in taking Game Development related courses so that I can build practical skills and experience while doing what I love.
