William So - President:

Hello everyone! It is my great pleasure to be running for CCSS President once again. In my three years of experience on the CCSS Board of Directors, I have amassed a varied skillset and informed insight on the way the society operates. The society has undergone many changes and significant growth under my governance over the past year. I plan to continue this trajectory as your president for next year. If re-elected,I will 1) advocate to the School of Computer Science and the Faculty of Science for an increase in dedicated space on campus for CS students; 2) create more opportunities for our student body to get involved in the society’s activities (e.g. facilitating event collaboration with experienced students, reforming Carleton DevClub, increasing student-prof interaction); and 3) improve the quality of the society’s current services (e.g. establishing higher standards for event organization, increasing funding for lounge services, bettering communication to students through relevant social media). It’s time for the CCSS to fill its shoes as a society that represents all of Carleton University’s undergraduate CS students. Jerry Liu - Vice President:

If elected, I would focus on increasing awareness for future CCSS events and resources. Events hosted by CCSS last year, such as the coffee socials and Dev Club, were successful in helping computer science students engage with each other and creating a sense of community. However, I feel that a large portion of students are not aware of the resources available to them that CCSS provide. As vice president, I would strive to encourage more students to be involved with CCSS through having more presence on social media platforms. I would also look to continue the work of the previous vice president and continue to improve event scheduling.

Matthew MacRae-Bovell - Treasurer:

If elected, my primary objective as Treasurer will be to ensure that the financial activities of the society are organized and transparent. With two years of experience being a CCSS board member and having been this year’s Vice President, I have previously overseen a year’s budget and will ensure the transition between Treasurers is seamless. In addition to my responsibilities as Treasurer, I plan to continue running events similar to those I ran this year including more technical workshops and industry related talks.

Alexa de Grandmont - Director of Academics:

Hi! My name is Alexa de Grandmont and I’m an upper (and I mean 6th-year upper) year BCS Honours student and 6-time TA for COMP 2804. I care a lot about grades, but even more about learning, and even more than that about helping others learn. Here are some ideas and plans for how I’d like to promote your learning, collaboration, and development of stuff you’re proud of:

• Developing resources for CS concepts that aren’t as well• documented online (Discrete Math in particular)
• Already in Progress: Expanding the COMP 1805 Discrete Math Study Center (http://cglab.ca/~discmath/), to include practice problems and mock exams for COMP 2804 (and later COMP 3804 and other theoretical CS courses)
• Encouraging student collaboration on resource development (see below)
• Come to Dev Club - Work on Side Projects
• Supplementary workshops on requested topics (e.g., code stuff, discrete math, algorithms, git & other topics not found in courses) for anyone who wants to review or get ahead
• Mentorship for lower-years / anyone looking for advice / friends
• Talks from Industry Professionals / Researchers
• Find out what tech industry is like, meet & greet & make connections

• Find out what graduate school is like, learn about research opportunities

Malcolm Smith - Director of Social:

If elected, I intend to continue developing the awesome events and opportunities that the CCSS offers!

I’ve had a lot of fun with my experience of being first year representative and working hard on creating and maintaining events for the CCSS! It was a blast to come up with events for the new first-year week, such as the jackbox night and the personal project expo.

Being elected as Director of Social would allow me to continue having fun working with the CCSS on managing new and exiting ways to engage students, and to have a great time at Carleton!

I hope that next year I will be able to bring back events such as these and continue working on making the Computer Science Society a highlight of your university experience!

Sarah Ali - Director of Social:

I’m a second year computer science student. I have experience managing a board game club at the University of Waterloo as President. My goal is to bring more diversity to CCSS events, namely more female students.

Event ideas:

• Anime/movie nights
• Side project events/support
• Resume/coop support workshops
• Networking events
• Mentorship

Tiffany Lau - Director of Inclusion:

If elected as Director of Inclusion, I will strive to help foster a strong sense of community among all undergraduate computer science students at Carleton.

I want CS students to be able to connect and learn from each other, build meaningful relationships, understand different perspectives, and get the most out of their university years!

I will make sure that the CCSS works closely together with the School of Computer Science to improve student involvement in the CS community,and more importantly, act as a liaison between CS students and the SCS to ensure that their voices are heard and address any questions or concerns.

I will aim to work with the newly elected board of directors to diversify our events and initiatives and to develop a variety of services to better serve the student body. I will ensure that the CCSS lounge is a welcoming and safe space for all CS students to relax, study, and bond! I would also like to ensure that an anonymous feedback and suggestions form is implemented so that all ideas are heard and considered.

Last but not least, I will do my best to ensure that CS students are well informed about the various volunteer opportunities, events, and resources that are available to them.
